How we ensure a high standard of repeatable print quality at Ryedale

Ryedale Printing’s reputation as a market-leading UV litho onto plastic print partner is built of decades of repeatable quality and value for money.

Our products are designed to be durable and are found outdoors, in greenhouses, in dishwashers, under the sea and on military battlegrounds.

To set our print quality standards, we work to ISO:12647 and use PressSign as our colour management tool. Our equipment and processes are frequently tested and calibrated to this standard. Colour can be subjective matter, so these tools and standards enable to us to manage colour so that it meets expectations in a scientific and objective way.

The process starts with carefully sourced consumables. We are specialist experts in UV printing onto polymers such as polypropylene and have a solid supply chain and network which enables us to use niche materials – both in-house and customer supplied – inks which meet this standard.

Then, in prepress, we set a unique Press colour profile to each material to create our House standards. For each job we apply the appropriate profile to plates along with Cip3 colour profile files.

As we move onto press, these Cip3 files aid in minimising make-ready sheets and improve throughput by setting the job profile on press and enable our skilled operators to achieve their profile targets quickly and efficiently across all materials. The job is deemed ready to print when it achieves an ‘ISO pass’ using PressSign. We are capable of printing to targets within a delta E of 3, and use these targets internally whenever viable.

Throughout printing, accurate colour is managed using closed-loop press density control as well as careful interventions by our expert press operatives.

Records are kept at each stage allowing us to revisit previous jobs to ensure repeatable quality over the months and years.

Part of our service is, when required, to dive deeper into this process with our customers, allowing us to develop practical, transparent solutions. Through our decades of experience, we employ our deep knowledge of UV litho-printing onto polymers so that our customers enjoy repeatable quality at a competitive price, along with industry leading technical support and solutions from enquiry stage all the way through to delivery and successive orders.

Plastics policy

We operate in line with the main objectives of the UK Plastics Pact, namely:

  • Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use plastic packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (reuse) delivery models.
  • 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
  • 70% of plastic packaging effectively recycled or composted.
  • 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging.

Examples of actions we have taken on this basis are:

  • In the 1990’s we switched all of our house stocks to polypropylene as the optimum material for the majority of our products taking into account long-term cost, availably and recyclability.
  • Sheets are reused to minimise make-ready waste.
  • All of our aluminium printing plates are recycled.
  • Smart LED lighting installed in offices and factory.
  • Machine power draw and overall electricity usage is monitored and minimised.
  • Lean manufacturing processes are widely used.
  • In 2019 we introduced a minimum of 20% recycled content into our core polypropylene products by default and increased this to 30% minimum for 2022.
  • We introduced RIC recycling codes to products and are members of OPRL.
  • Where possible, our products are designed and priced to produce maximum yield from our plastic sheets.
  • All of our production waste is of a relatively high value so is separated on site and recycled in the UK.
  • In October 2021 we installed a 572 panel 250kw solar system on our factory roof.
  • Over 2021 we started to phase in EVs to our fleet, with charging stations connected to the solar panels.
  • In October 2022, we added 56 panels to our office roof as well as a 12kw battery system to further minimise our power consumption from the grid.
  • From 2022 we continued to analyse our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions as per the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, with a view to reducing waste and minimising carbon footprint through direct actions. Until carbon measurements are standardised, so that interpretation and presentation of data is more consistent, we advise that carbon footprint measurements are best used as guidelines rather than definitive comparisons.
  • We currently generate around 196Mwh/year from solar PV.
